From powerful actives to potent natural ones, our beauty products are packed with skincare ingredients, each more high-performing than the next. But could you be missing out on that one game-changing ingredient that can elevate your skincare game? Yes, depending on your age group, there’s an ingredient whose benefits far outrun the rest. We ask experts to reveal the specific skincare ingredients that can help you achieve that elusive dermal-plumping glow.
Niacinamide for your 20s
Niacinamide might have surfaced everywhere, but it’s turning out to be the perfect antidote for your 20s. “It’s important to start using the right skincare ingredients before your 30s hit. This is where niacinamide comes in to improve skin barrier and reduce breakouts and inflammation that are a result of the changes that your body goes through during this phase of life,” says Dr. Geetika Mittal Gupta, Aesthetic Physician and founder of aesthetic clinic ISAAC Luxe. As for who can use it, it turns out it’s generally safe for all, though some may experience mild side effects such as flushing, itching, or irritation. “This occurs when you combine it with AHAs or BHAs, which can hamper the PH level and reduce effectiveness. Other than this, niacinamide is a super ingredient that works well with literally everything,” she says.
Using niacinamide when you are exposed to the external environment can be especially beneficial, although it can be used at any time of the day. Add it to your routine twice a day for best results. Mittal says she’s noticed controlled sebum production for oily skin and reduced redness and acne in no more than two weeks. However, these results last as long as you continue using it regularly. “Lastly, you don’t have to necessarily stop using niacinamide once you hit the next decade as it suits all ages and skin types,” says Mittal.
Ferulic acid for your 30s
This plant-derived antioxidant is a surprisingly potent ingredient for this decade as it has the ability to neutralise free radicals that are responsible for premature ageing. “Ferulic acid benefits include helping to improve the appearance of existing fine lines, wrinkles, and skin discoloration like acne pigmentation, and it also restores skin firmness,” says Dr. Yash Mehta, Facial Plastic Surgeon, ENT Surgeon and Founder of Aesthetic and Cosmetic Surgery Clinic (ACSC). It’s also safe for everyone, including those with blemish-prone skin, unless one develops an allergic reaction. He advises using 0.3 % to 1% as a solo ingredient, or sometimes up to 12% can be used in combination with other ingredients.
Pairing it with vitamins C and E helps them get stabilised and boosts its photoprotection benefits. “It can be combined with niacinamide, retinol, phloretin, and silymarin. You can also infuse ferulic acid by microneedling, aquagold, nanofat grafting,” he adds. Wait for 60 days to start seeing results, but continue using it for at least six months before stopping.
Exosomes for your 40s
Exosomes are a new ingredient that is fast acquiring a reputation for being somewhat of a miracle worker. “They work as messengers in your skin that help to facilitate communication from one cell to another. They are perfect for women in their 40s as they help with skin rejuvenation at a cellular level with no side effects,” says Dr. Madhuri Agarwal, Founder and Medical Director of Yavana Aesthetics. “Since it contains lipids, proteins, growth factors, and peptides, it can used once or even twice a day right from the beginning without the fear of reactivity, unlike a retinol,” she adds. From identifying and repairing defective skin cells to helping build new collagen and elastin and assisting with new growth, exosomes pack in many skin benefits, especially for this decade. Agarwal lists one catch, though -- given that it’s a new ingredient, few good products are currently available. Look for face washes, serums, and face creams that contain exosomes.
