With breakfast the most important meal of the day, Michael Mosley has shared the healthy ingredient he adds to his eggs.
We all know that starting your day off on the right foot is important, but the diet expert says your morning plate of eggs can make you happy thanks to just one important ingredient - fermented food.
The advice comes from Michael's book Just One Thing, published in The Sunday Times, in which he detailed 16 steps to improve your life. One of his simplest pieces of advice comes down to breakfast.
As the author of the Fast 800 diet and 5:2 diets, Michael is all about eating a nutrient rich diet.
He writes: "With my breakfast eggs I often eat a big dollop of homemade sauerkraut, which is bursting with beneficial bacteria."
Michael references a study from University College Cork that showed switching to a diet with whole grains and vegetables plus two to three servings of fermented foods - specifically kefir, sauerkraut or kimchi - lowered stress levels and improved mood in just four weeks.
"You can buy sauerkraut, kombucha and kefir in large supermarkets, but do check they contain live bacteria," he adds. Luckily, all three ingredients can be picked up in major UK supermarkets.
Kefir is a tart fermented milk that can be eaten instead of yoghurt in a smoothie or with fruit and nuts. Tesco sells bottles and kefir yoghurt from 65p, plus Sainsbury's has kefir from £1.20 and Morrisons sells kefir products from £1.25.
Sauerkraut is a tangy pickled cabbage like kimchi - a spicier version made with garlic, ginger, and Korean chili. Tesco sells four types of sauerkraut from 85p whilst Sainsbury's has a variety from £1.15 and Morrisons has jars from £1.39.
Kimchi can be picked up from £3.50 at Tesco, £2 from Sainsbury's, and £2.60 from Morrisons.
Michael Mosley is full of tips and tricks to live a healthier life. The presenter has shared how to feel younger in two minutes, the time you should drink coffee in the morning, and how to burn belly fat.
